Speaker Biography: Nell Irvin Painter is Edwards Professor of American History Emeritus at Princeton University, where he is director of the Afro-American studies from 1997 to 2000. Painter numerous books, articles, reviews and other essays. His books are "Creating American blacks" and "History of South Across the Color Line." Painter was elected president of the Southern HistoricalAssociation for 2007 and president of the Organization of American historians in the years 2007-2008. He also served on numerous editorial and as an officer of many professional organizations including the American Historical Association, the American Antiquarian Society, the Society for the Study of African American Life and History and the Association of Black Women historians.
